Whale Watch on MV Loch Seaforth
Stornoway - Ullapool ferry (return)
Sunday 29 June, 8am - 2:10pm
Hosted by Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust

Join HWDT aboard the MV Loch Seaforth as we collect vital data on whale and dolphin distribution using our Whale Track app.

The waters of the west coast of Scotland are extremely important for wildlife, with increasing numbers of whales, dolphins and basking sharks being spotted in the Minch. This sailing across the Minch from Ullapool to Stornoway is rapidly becoming one of the UK’s top spots for marine wildlife such as whales and dolphins. On this crossing, you might see common dolphins, minke whales, harbour porpoises, bottlenose dolphins, and even larger species like humpback or fin whales. Over the past few summers, observers on the ferry crossing have witnessed large numbers of species such as the common dolphin and minke whale, together with harbour porpoises and bottlenose dolphins. Some of the bigger baleen whale species, such as humpback and fin whale, have also started utilising this stretch of water - the latter being the second largest animal to have ever lived on the planet.
CROSSING DETAILS:

Stornoway depart: 08:00
Ullapool arrive: 10:40
Ullapool depart: 11:30

Keening: The Song of the Stranding
Traigh Mhor, North Tolsta, Isle of Lewis
Saturday 12 July, 10am - 7:30pm
Hosted by Sam Gare, Alex South, Katherine Wren, Nerea Bello & Aya Kobayashi

Be part of a day of collective remembrance on Traigh Mhor beach. We invite you to come together to pay tribute to the 55 long-finned pilot whales lost in the 2023 stranding. Join in creating Whale sand sculptures — from small tributes to life-size. Accompanied by live music shaped by their voices, as the tide returns to the shore, these sculptures will be gently reclaimed by the sea - a symbolic return of the whales to their home.

On 12 July 2025, the beach at Traigh Mhor, Isle of Lewis, will transform into a poignant site of remembrance and performance. Keening - The Song of the Stranding commemorates the tragic mass stranding of 55 long-finned pilot whales in 2023, blending music, dance, and visual art in a deeply collaborative project.

The performance, informed by scientific research and local workshops, will culminate in a communal act of creating sand sculptures of whales, led by visual artist Sam Gare and choreographed by Aya Kobayashi. As the tide reclaims the sculptures, music composed by Alex South, Nerea Bello, and Katherine Wren will blend the haunting vocalisations of pilot whales with the Gaelic and universal tradition of lamentation, keening - a vocal lament for the dead, forging an emotional connection between community, art, and nature.

Attendees of the art performance will have two options: those participating in the main whale sand casting, which requires attending a workshop on 10 July, (and will be managed via eventbrite), and those who prefer a more flexible experience can simply drop in on the day to help cast smaller whales. People are welcome to come directly to the beach, but due to limited parking onsite, we will also be running a shuttle service from Stornoway to help with transport.

An accessible indoor session will be hosted at the nearby Tolsta Community Hall featuring the project's music, information, research, a small exhibition about the artwork, and information stands about the work of marine rescue organisations including British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) and Scottish Mass Stranding Scheme (SMASS) and how you can get involved in marine wildlife conservation.

Details:
